4 lovely things to see and do in West Sussex this autumn and winter

If you’re wondering how to keep yourself and your family entertained as the days get shorter and colder, we can help.

West Sussex has plenty to offer for solo trips, days out with your grandchildren, and rainy days.

Keep reading to discover four lovely things to see and do in this beautiful county during the autumn and winter months.

1. Explore the South Downs National Park

Whether you’re planning a gentle stroll, a heart-pumping bike ride, or a spot of stargazing, there’s a good chance you’ll find what you’re looking for in the South Downs National Park.

The “gateway to England” offers 1,627 square kilometres of rolling green hills, ancient woodland, and ecologically-significant chalk grassland.

There are lots of marked trails to explore and an abundance of wildlife, including rare and unexpected species such as barn owls, otters and brown trout.

If you fancy trying something new, head to the water for paddle-boarding and kayaking. Brave souls might like to give paragliding a go.

The park is easy to access by train or car. Alternatively, buy a South Downs Discovery Ticket and enjoy an unlimited hop-on-hop-off bus service across the park and throughout much of the South of England. A family day ticket for up to five people costs just £20 as of November 2025.

2. Admire the architecture of Chichester Cathedral

2025 marks the 950th anniversary of the formation of the diocese of Chichester and Chichester Cathedral. A diverse programme of events has been running throughout the year to celebrate this important milestone.

If you’ve not yet visited, autumn and winter are great times to enjoy the concerts, tours, special exhibitions, and community events taking place as part of “Chichester950”.

It’s also a good option for a rainy day as there’s plenty to see and do indoors, including an on-site café and shop. However, if the weather is kind, you might enjoy a picnic lunch on one of the beautiful green spaces across the Cathedral Quarter.

Admission is by donation, with a recommended amount of £7.00. It’s worth checking the website for visiting times before travelling, as these can sometimes be disrupted by special services, events, and conservation work.

3. Wrap up for a walk on West Wittering Beach

You might consider the beach to be a summer destination, but it can be a fantastic place for a walk during the quieter autumn and winter months.

West Wittering Beach is a firm favourite among locals, and it’s easy to see why. This award-winning stretch of coastline is renowned for its natural beauty and golden sand dunes.

Wrap up warm and enjoy the stunning views of Chichester Harbour and the South Downs.

If you’re a dog owner, another bonus of visiting from October onwards is that your four-legged friend can roam freely (during May to September, access is restricted to marked areas).

Once you’ve exhausted yourself in the fresh air, you might like to head to one of the many beachside cafes or pubs to sample some of the delicious local seafood.

4. Enjoy a family trip to Leonardslee Lights

Billed as a “midwinter light’s dream”, this popular event runs from 28 November to 30 December 2025. During this time, the stunning Grade I-listed Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens in Horsham are transformed into a magical kingdom of illuminations.

A team of artists, an award-winning sound designer, and spellbinding performers have created an immersive experience your whole family will love.

As well as the mile-long trail, visitors can enjoy a lively hub of food, drinks, and entertainment in the Leonardslee village. It’s the perfect way to kick off the festive season and make memories with your loved ones.

There is a range of tickets to suit all needs and budgets. What’s more, you can now switch your tickets to another date or entry time up to 10 days before your planned visit. So, it’s well worth booking ahead.
