In Autumn, the UK’s forests and woodlands are full of colour and vibrant wildlife, making it an ideal time to explore the country’s most beautiful nature spots.
What’s more, FSC Forest Week, which is a global campaign to increase appreciation of forests, is not far away (20 to 26 September).
So, whether you’re planning a relaxing stroll, a strenuous hike, or a family day out, September is a great month to discover new places for a woodland adventure.
Here are four of our favourite UK forests and woodlands.
1. Grizedale Forest, Cumbria, England
This World Heritage Site in the heart of the Lake District is packed with things to see and do.
Follow one of the marked trails on foot, bicycle or even horseback, and enjoy the striking artwork that’s scattered throughout the forest as you go.
There are lots of fun activities for both children and dogs, such as the interactive Wallace and Gromit forest walkies and the Stick Man trail, which include games and challenges for humans and hounds.
If you’re staying locally overnight, be sure to allow time for a trip to the brand-new observatory and planetarium.
The Grizedale valley is a Designated Dark Sky Discovery Site, with little light pollution, making the observatory an ideal stargazing spot on a clear night. Your family will also love the state-of-the-art planetarium, where a team of experienced astronomers will take you on a guided tour of distant galaxies.
2. Gwydir Forest Park, Betws-y-coed, Wales
Gwydir Forest Park surrounds Betws-y-coed, a charming village in Eryri National Park.
There are plenty of waymarked trails to choose from, including easy strolls around beautiful lakes and steep climbs up forested hillsides.
There’s also a permanent orienteering course that begins just outside Betws-y-coed and ends in the centre of the village. You can download and print the map before you leave home.
When you’ve exhausted yourself with all that walking, head to Cae’n y Coed where you’ll find a lovely picnic area with panoramic mountain views.
3. Kielder Forest, Northumberland, England
Kielder is England’s largest forest and the biggest man-made lake in Northern Europe.
In addition to walking trails, off-road cycling, and a resident population of ospreys, there’s a wide range of activities available at Kielder waterside, the visitor’s hub, including:
- Bike hire
- Miniature golf
- Birds of prey centre
- Pleasure boat and fishing hire
- Outdoor children’s play area
- Indoor swimming pool, sauna, and spa
- Water activities, such as paddleboarding and canoeing.
There’s also contemporary open-air art and architecture to discover throughout the site, an observatory, and several eateries.
Kielder is also a must-visit for wildlife lovers, as it’s home to 50% of England’s red squirrel population, as well as boasting wild goats, roe deer, salmon, otters, and water voles.
If you’re looking for an action-packed daytrip or weekend for the whole family, this beautiful spot in Northumberland could be just the ticket. You can even stay overnight in one of the luxury log cabins on site.
4. Inchcailloch, Loch Lomond, Scotland
If you’re keen to explore forests and woodlands that are off the beaten track, this hidden gem in Scotland could be just what you’re looking for.
Inchailloch is a wooded island in the Loch Lomond National Nature Reserve, and it’s bursting with natural and cultural heritage. In the autumn months, you might be lucky enough to see some of the migrating wildfowl that set up home here.
There are three marked walking routes, each taking around 30 to 45 minutes. If you’re feeling energetic, you might like to climb the highest hill on the island – Tom na Nigheanan, which means “hill of the daughter”. The views from the top are well worth the effort!
The only way to access this unique woodland is by boat. A waterbus runs from Balmaha and Luss from March to October, so early autumn is the perfect time to visit.
If you make the journey, you’ll be rewarded with a remote wilderness that offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
