In early autumn, the leaves begin to change colour, creating spectacular scenery in and around Bristol. What better way to spend a day than wrapping up and heading for a stroll in a nearby nature spot?
Whether you’re striking out alone or with family, there are plenty of routes to explore locally.
Read on to discover four beautiful autumn walks in the city or a short drive away.
1. Leigh Woods
This National Trust nature reserve offers beautiful forest scenery and stunning views over the River Avon. It lies 3 to 4 miles south-west of the city centre, just over the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge. Hop in the car or get on a bus, and you’ll be there within 15 to 20 minutes.
There are several officially waymarked trails, split between dedicated walking loops and purpose-built cycling routes.
The purple walking trail is a 1.5-mile, gentle route that winds through a variety of woodland habitats and is suitable for mobility scooters. The red (coppice) walking trail is a 0.75-mile family-friendly route, mainly on level paths.
If you fancy more of a challenge, there are plenty of options for creating a longer walk. You can find inspiration in your preferred walking app or dig out a map and create your own route.
Leigh Woods is free to enter, but you’ll need to pay for parking. It’s also dog-friendly, so your four-legged pal can come too.

2. Ashton Court Estate
Located 2 miles west of the city centre, the Ashton Court Estate spans 850 acres of ancient woodland, grassland, and historic deer park.
It’s home to more than 500 veteran trees, including the famous Domesday Oak. This was designated as one of the 50 Great British Trees for Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee and is around 700 years old.
At this time of year, the estate explodes in seasonal colour from species such as the lemon‑yellow ginkgo and cone‑dropping Wellingtonia. You might be lucky enough to hear a jay bird calling or spot red deer grazing at dawn or dusk.
With panoramic views over Bristol, well-maintained paths, and a dog-friendly café, it’s a perfect place to kick up the leaves this autumn.
Admission to the grounds is free, but you’ll need some change for parking.

3. Westonbirt Arboretum
If you have the time to venture further afield, Westonbirt Arboretum is a great choice. It’s described as a “magical tree garden”, and it has 2,500 different types of trees and shrubs from around the world.
At this time of year, the arboretum explodes in colour, with its Japanese maple collections a central attraction.
There are 600 acres and 17 miles of trails to explore, including an autumn trail and a treetop walkway that takes you 13 metres up into the canopy. Westonbirt also offers a range of guided and self-guided walks.
It’s well worth the 45- to 50-minute drive from Bristol.
Pre-booking is recommended during autumn (25 September to 15 November) as it’s one of the most popular times of year to visit. Westonbirt is open every day from 9 am, except Christmas Day, with last admission at 4.30 pm, 30 minutes before the arboretum closes. A full-price adult ticket is £19 on a weekday and £22 at the weekend and on bank holidays.

4. Blaise Castle Estate
Lying 5.5 miles north-west of Bristol city centre, Blaise Castle Estate offers 650 acres of Grade II-registered parkland.
There are footpaths throughout the estate, and you can download maps of the walking routes from the Bristol City Council website. Trails range from 1 to 3 miles.
As well as extensive woodland and riverside trails, there’s a children’s play area, museum, castle, and café, making it a great option for a family day out.
The castle is a striking 18th-century Gothic folly. If you want to look inside, you’ll need to time your visit carefully as it’s only open on the first Sunday of the month between Easter and October.
Blaise Castle Estate is always open, although access may be restricted on major event days. Entry is free, but parking costs between £1 and £3, depending on how long you stay.
