Aspire community update: 4 ways we’re supporting young people through sport

Here at the Aspire Partnership, we’re big believers in the transformative power of sport to empower individuals. In light of the exciting summer of sport on the horizon – from the men’s football World Cup to the Commonwealth Games – we wanted to share some of the important work that we’re doing to support young people’s physical and mental wellbeing through sporting pursuits.

Read on to find out more about three community projects we’re engaged in via the Bristol Sports Foundation, as well as an update from Sean Guirey’s ongoing sponsorship of the Stars Netball Club.

Bright Sparks

Bright Sparks is a 38-week educational initiative that targets disaffected young people aged 12 to 15 through rugby and personal development. It’s an impactful programme that uses sport to help develop important skills and self-belief. In addition to funding, the Aspire Partnership delivers a series of workshops focusing on life skills, career planning, and financial literacy.

We think that the opportunity to engage with supportive employers and providers can be enormously beneficial for young people facing difficulties in school. We hope that through our support of the Bright Sparks programme, we can inspire them to take positive steps towards a brighter future.

Bear in Mind

The Aspire Partnership also supports Bear in Mind, a 12-week health and wellbeing initiative run by the Bristol Bears Community Foundation. Designed to build confidence, resilience, and mental wellbeing in girls aged 12 to 15, the programme also provides tours of workplaces, helping girls gain insight into career paths and opportunities available to them.

When it comes to the impact of Bear in Mind, the numbers speak for themselves:

  • 96% of participants report an increase in physical activity
  • 84% report feeling more confident and positive about themselves

We’re proud to support a programme that’s making a real difference in the lives of young girls across the city.

Employability programmes

Alongside our support of Bright Sparks and Bear in Mind, the Aspire Partnership also provides backing for a number of employability programmes, including Boost Your Future and Ambition Lawrence Weston.

As part of our involvement, we deliver interactive workshops around budgeting for young people from lower socio-economic backgrounds, helping them to identify positive ways to manage their finances.

Sean in Sussex

Finally, we wanted to touch on the brilliant work that Sean Guirey, our Sussex-based partner and financial planner here at the Aspire Partnership, is doing to support young athletes and keep young girls engaged in sport.

Sean sponsors the Stars Netball Club, and our ongoing support is contributing to an impressive season for the club across all age groups; the U11 County team have won eight of their 10 matches, while the U14 Regional team finished the season in a creditable 7th place.

The club also organises a series of excellent off-court learning opportunities, including sessions on nutrition and maintaining a positive mindset, both of which were very well-received by the girls.

In addition, Sean provides sponsorship for Mollie Adams, an exceptionally talented batter and wicketkeeper Mollie spent the winter with the England U19 training squad, and in late March, she embarked on the tour of Australia with the rest of the squad. We’re thrilled with the success Mollie has enjoyed in recent months and can’t wait to see what the future holds for her in the rest of 2026 and beyond! . This is another great example of the work we’re doing at the Aspire Partnership to support young people through sport.

Get in touch

From helping young people understand the importance of good decision-making to developing valuable life skills – such as resilience, goal setting, and dealing with emotional highs and lows – sport can have a seriously positive effect on young people’s mental and physical wellbeing.

As such, we’re proud to say that we’ve already committed to a new programme of events with the Bristol Bears Community Foundation, and Ken Hall, partner and Chartered financial planner, will be leading a team of six volunteers from the Aspire team to deliver the plan. Stay tuned for more updates!
