Jetting off for three or four nights abroad could offer an exciting escape from daily life – you may even get the chance to tick a few items off your bucket list.
Travel operator Tui highlights city breaks as a major travel trend this year, following a 25% increase in bookings for experiences in urban destinations in 2025.
However, without careful planning and preparation, you might feel rushed and stressed trying to cram all the sights into a short trip.
Keep reading to discover five helpful tips for keeping things running smoothly and ensuring that your next city break is memorable in all the right ways.
1. Create a rough itinerary before you go
Trying to do everything in just a few days could add unnecessary pressure and leave you feeling exhausted rather than refreshed by your holiday.
Instead, prioritise the sights and activities that interest you most and build a draft itinerary. For all major cities, there are plenty of guidebooks and online resources to help you plan.
Try not to fill your schedule for every minute of each day. Staying flexible allows scope for spontaneity and relaxation – you never know when an impromptu street concert or carnival might appear.
2. Research how to get around the city
Every city is different when it comes to size, layout, and public transport options.
For example, Berlin in Germany is one of Europe’s most spread-out cities, and major sights are relatively far apart. In contrast, Porto in Portugal features a dense, walkable historic centre where top attractions are close to one another.
Researching the logistics of getting between the sights on your itinerary before you go could save you considerable time and stress when you’re on holiday with just a few days to explore.
You might find it helpful to plot approximate travel times, download maps, and pre-buy multi-day tickets for public transport online.
3. Plan your flights with care
Pay close attention to flight times if you’re only planning to be away for a few nights. Those “too-good-to-be-true” deals might have you arriving in the middle of the night or leaving just after breakfast.
This could leave you with less time in your chosen city than you hoped for, and you may be too tired to enjoy the trip.
It’s also worth opting for direct flights where possible and allowing buffer time for delays.
4. Pack smart
Consider taking carry-on luggage only. This could save you both time and money as there’ll be no checked bag fees to pay, and you can skip the baggage claim queue.
What’s more, it’ll be a lot easier to navigate unfamiliar and possibly busy streets without a large suitcase in tow. This is especially true if there are obstacles like cobbled streets and steep stairs to overcome.
A few essential items to pack include:
- Comfortable walking shoes
- A portable phone charger
- Adapters for local plugs
- A reusable water bottle
- A guidebook.
If you’re travelling with others, pack strategically by splitting shared items between your carry-on bags.
5. Prepare for the unexpected
Even the best-laid plans can go awry due to circumstances beyond your control, such as delayed flights, stolen luggage, or illness.
Creating a safety net could provide valuable peace of mind and help you feel less stressed if anything unexpected occurs. You might like to consider:
- Taking out appropriate travel insurance
- Keeping your phone charged at all times
- Writing down important contact details
- Enabling phone location sharing for safety
- Sharing your itinerary and accommodation details with loved ones
- Ensuring you have several payment methods – debit and credit cards, a digital wallet, and cash
- Packing an “emergency” kit, including first aid basics, cash, a portable charger, and medications.
