3 wonderful activities to enjoy in and around Bristol this Autumn

As the nights draw in and temperatures fall, you might feel tempted to snuggle up indoors during your free time.

However, there are lots of wonderful places to visit in and around Bristol during autumn, whether it rains or shines.

So, wrap up and head out to explore some of these three activities and attractions in your local area – we’ve included some indoor options for when the weather isn’t kind!

1. Kick up the leaves on a walk in beautiful nature spots

Walking in nature is a great way to boost your physical and mental wellbeing all year round. But there’s nothing quite like a stroll in autumn, when the leaves are full of colour and the air is crisp.

Happily, Bristol is blessed with over 400 parks and green spaces. So, whether you’re planning a gentle ramble or a calorie-busting hike, there’s no shortage of choice, wherever you are in the city.

Blaise Castle Estate is a great option for a family day out. This large public park near Henbury covers 650 acres and includes extensive woodland, scenic walks, and play areas for children. The estate is always open and access is free. If you want to see inside the castle, you’ll need to visit on the first Sunday of the month or on a bank holiday.

Alternative options in Bristol include the Downs, which border Clifton and Redland, the University of Bristol Botanic Garden, and Brandon Hill Nature Reserve.

If you fancy venturing beyond the city, the steep slopes of the Mendip Hills National Landscape are a great challenge for adventurous hikers. Or head to the National Trust-owned Dyrham Park for a gentle meander around rolling parkland and formal gardens.

2. Enjoy seasonal events with your children and grandchildren

Bristol and the surrounding areas have a full and varied events calendar to keep you and your family entertained throughout the autumn. A few highlights include:

Pumpkin Patch at Avon Valley Adventure & Wildlife Park

Open on weekends from 27 September and daily during half term until 31 October, this is the South West’s biggest pumpkin event. The whole family will love the theatrical performances, pumpkin picking, funfair, and delicious street food.

Bonfire night celebrations

On and around 5 November, the city’s sky will be filled with magnificent displays of lights and sounds. Fireworks to Music at Avon Valley Adventure Park and Bonfire Night at Victoria Park promise to be spectacular events. For a quieter experience, head to Old Down Country Park for Low Noise Fireworks.

Halloween at Wookey Hole

From 4 October to 2 November, these breath taking caves are transformed into the “Home of Halloween”. There’s a Halloween 4D cinema, Vampire Circus, a mirror maze, daily fancy dress competitions, and more activities for all ages.

3. Have fun indoors on rainy days

The wettest months in the UK are typically the autumn and winter months. So, it’s a good idea to have some rainy-day activity ideas up your sleeve.

Fortunately, there are lots of indoor venues in Bristol offering fun and adventure all year round.

Wake the Tiger

This is the UK’s largest immersive art experience and the world’s first “Amazement Park®”. In other words, it’s part art gallery, part theme park.

There are more than 40 interactive spaces to explore as you journey through a dream-inspired world. Adults and children alike will love the hands-on exhibits, themed rooms, and virtual reality experiences.

Bristol Museum and Art Gallery

This stunning building is home to artefacts, art, and natural wonders from the last billion years of the Earth’s history. Arranged over three floors and with a full calendar of events, there’s plenty to keep you entertained for hours. What’s more, entry is free – although donations are welcome.

We The Curious Museum

This unique museum for people of all ages is designed to inspire curiosity and creativity in science and art. It offers 200 interactive exhibits covering topics as diverse as space exploration and the human body. The centre also hosts the UK’s first 3D planetarium.

There’s a rolling programme of activities, workshops, talks and events, so it’s worth checking out what’s on and booking ahead.
